Have you ever stopped to consider the root of your daily thoughts? When we strip away the distractions of modern life and get to the core of human nature, a profound reality emerges: we are entirely shaped by the “seeds” we allow to take root in our minds.
By default, when we reach an age of understanding, humanity carries an inherent inclination toward corruption. In theological terms, this is the nature of being of the seed of the serpent. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. We are given a profound choice: to change our nature by changing the very seed of our thinking.
Here is a look at the two opposing spiritual natures fighting for the garden of your mind, and why true spiritual transformation can never be forced.
The Dual Natures: Lies vs. Truth
When you break it down to the absolute fundamentals, there are only two natures we can possess. These natures stem from two entirely opposite spirits:
- The Seed of Lies: This represents the carnal nature, the flesh, and everything that comes from “below.” It inevitably produces corrupt fruit.
- The Seed of Truth: This represents the Lord—a loving, heavenly nature from “above.” It naturally produces good fruit.
The Mind is a Garden. The fruit grown within your mind doesn’t just affect you; it is eaten of by others and is seeded into their lives as well. Your thoughts are the root system, producing a literal “tree of thinking” within your brain.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Perspective
Understanding the depth of these two seeds requires looking at the full picture of scriptural history. This deep spiritual insight is highly emphasized within the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition.
Unlike standard Western biblical canons, the Ethiopian Orthodox Church preserves a broader canon of 88 books. This expanded scriptural library offers a richer, more comprehensive view of human nature, spiritual warfare, and our divine potential to choose the seed of God.
True Truth Cannot Be Forced
A vital characteristic of the seed of truth is that it operates entirely through love and free will.
You can teach someone about the beauty of living in truth, but you can never force them to adopt it. Because the spirit of God is rooted in love, it grants absolute choice to every man and woman. Force belongs to the carnal nature; invitation belongs to the divine.

The Test of Wisdom: Handling Rebuke
How do you know which seed is currently ruling your mind? It often comes down to how you handle correction.
Only a truly wise and honest person can handle a rebuke constructively. Those rooted in truth welcome correction because they desire growth. However, those trying to share truth must exercise discernment:
- Be careful who you correct. If you offer a rebuke to someone firmly rooted in the carnal nature, they may turn, use it against you, and attempt to rend you.
Final Thoughts: What are you cultivating?
Every day, the words you speak, the media you consume, and the thoughts you harbor act as seeds. You have the power to choose whether you are cultivating a garden of carnal corruption or a heavenly tree of life.
What kind of fruit is your mind producing today?
